The Good:
You cannot beat the location. Being directly connected to Nagano Station is a total game-changer, especially if you’re hauling ski gear or catching an early Shinkansen. The rooms are spacious, quiet, and the staff is incredibly professional.
The Bad:
The breakfast buffet is the biggest letdown. While the quality of the food is fine, the menu is extremely repetitive. If you are staying for more than two nights, you’ll find the exact same selection of eggs, bacon, and local sides every single morning.
Verdict:
Stay here for the convenience and the comfort, but maybe skip the breakfast add-on after day two and explore the bakeries in the attached MIDORI mall instead.
Faça o check-in às 15h.
Fonte termal: externa e interna.
Eu ainda aprecio o serviço e a experiência.
This is our first time to ski Japan. This hotel was located perfectly with great access to some super beginning facilities. Good enough about skiing, the hotel is perfect and the staff is amazing. The food and amenities are excellent. We had a private hot spring every evening really added to the enjoyment. My wife and I and eight year-old daughter had a great time you so much for the great experience and all the hospitality Perfect Stay. 100%!!!
Hotel Grandvert is a gem for travelers who wants a good stay on a budget. It is located within a few minutes walk from the karuizawa station and the premier outlet shopping, family mart is right across the street and lawson is just adjacent to it, which makes it super convenient for us to travel and get some daily necessities. The room is spacious and comfortable, and my family loves the library (although mostly japanese and limited foreign language available) and the chill out area for a drink after a long walk during the day.
I changed rooms because my first room smelled strongly like someone's body odor, but the second room also smelled, just less. So I didn't bother to change again. I've never had this issue elsewhere in Japan and I've stayed at a lot of different hotels in Japan, weird...
Breakfast has varieties but tasted so so...
I was woken up once by people talking in the hallway. Door sound proof isn't great. So if you're a light sleeper, maybe use ear plugs.
Good service and amenities otherwise.

The hotel is brand new. The room is lovely and so spacious! The bed was huge and it was comfortable, we all slept well every night. Staff were courteous and attentive. We really enjoyed our stay here. The hotel location is also perfect, right on old karuizawa ginza street with many food and shopping options nearby during the day. The breakfast options were very limited and the food was the same every day, so I found it a challenge to feed my toddler. Basic food items like cereal and slice bread were not available. The fruit options were also limited and not the most child friendly e.g. pineapple, grapefruit and grapes. Also, the rooms are not made every day but you can request for the staff to clean and make the room. Overall we still had a great stay and hope to visit again soon.

BBryce van de LaarFrom the moment you enter Kokuya Ryokan, be prepared to leave the real world behind and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You swap your shoes for slippers at the door and don’t see them again until you leave. You will receive a warm welcome from polite and gentle-mannered staff, get taken up to your beautiful room, and once you’ve changed into your traditional yukata, it’s time to let the relaxation begin. The multi-course dinner will probably be one of the best meals you’ve had in your life, with many unusual textures and flavors to try. The futons are comfortable, and your room is kept toasty warm. There are even skincare products to keep you pampered and moisturized between soaks in the onsen. Honestly, you won’t even need to open your suitcase while you’re there.
The staff will take you through all the logistics when you arrive, but there are some things that might be useful to know in advance.
- The ryokan sends a shuttle to Yudanaka station at about 15:00 to collect new arrivals, so time your journey to take advantage of this benefit.
- The ryokan also offers guests the opportunity to catch a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park immediately after breakfast the next morning.
- After you leave the ryokan, they will take your luggage down to the coffee shop opposite the station, so you don’t need to worry about those logistics.
- Trains from Yudanaka back to Nagano leave at 12:30 and 15:30.
- The ryokan itself has several private onsens that you can reserve for a 45-minute slot. Because the onsens are on the property, you can go in with your partner or travel companions regardless of gender. It’s a boutique hotel, so you don’t have to worry about not getting access to all the onsens you want.
- The ryokan is on the main road of the Shibu Onsen town. The hotel will give you a key so you can wonder down the main road, visiting any of the public onsens you wish - however, with so many gorgeous and more private onsens in the hotel itself, you probably won’t have time or the desire for this.
- Also, there is a coffee machine in the room! (I was worried about having to survive without coffee, and this turned out to be an unfounded concern).
We had an incredible and totally indulgent time at Kokuya. Experiencing a traditional ryokan is a privilege that you should try at least once if you can. And adding the Snow Monkeys in give the trip a double purpose, making it that much more memorable. The only thing that would have made the trip better is if we had been allowed to linger longer over every course of our dinner.
AAnonymous UserWe had a wonderful stay at the Mampei Hotel. The hotel is beautifully designed inside and out, the staff are fantastic, and the meals we had for breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner were all delicious, as were drinks at the iconic hotel bar. Highly recommended and we will definitely stay again.
GGuest UserWe spent 2 nights in Prince after first 2 nights in Kusatsu onsen town. The hotel looked underwhelming on arrival and the front office service was efficient but cursory compared to the warm hospitality we had in the ryokan stay. It was low season and hotel was very quiet and had a ”cold” atmosphere.
I was further disappointed when we were shown our room which was on the lowest floor with a simple garden view. On requesting the check-in staff for a change of room on higher floor and a more scenic view, I was told there is an upgrade charge, which I accepted. The new room was the same size and configuration but on a higher floor with a nice view of Mt Asama. While I was happy to pay the fee, I can't help but compare their practice with all the hotels that I have stayed in all these years, where room changes were complimentary so long as the room type remains the same. Nevertheless, the hotel's facilities delighted me immensely and I enjoyed the overall experience.
The highlight of the hotel stay was the fantastic view of Asama in a high ceiling dining room with full glass window. We were able to have different table seatings for both morning breakfast as the hotel occupancy was low, which gave us different perspectives of the scenery.
The other highlight of the hotel is the onsen facility which is located in a separate building on higher ground, accessible via a self service automated tram. Aside from Asama view in the outdoor onsens, there is a common lounge which has equally awesome view of Asama. We enjoyed our time soaking in onsen and resting in the lounge.

I would go back to Prince Asama and experience the scenery during a different season!
AAnonymous UserThe room size was good and the beds were very comfortable. The view in the room was a highlight, overlooking a beautiful green garden with mountains in the background.
Walking around the hotel was very enjoyable. The entire area is lush and green, and there is also a lake which adds to the atmosphere. There is an activity area as well, although it is mostly designed for kids and requires an extra fee. Bicycle rental is available, but it was surprisingly expensive, probably the highest I have seen in Japan.
The onsen was unfortunately closed for two out of our three nights. We were able to use the onsen at East hotel, but it was not as good as the one in our hotel.
A nice touch was the coffee. There is a popular coffee shop in town called Mikado, and the hotel provided their drip coffee for free every day. It was excellent, and when we asked for more, they kindly provided it again at no extra charge.
There is also a FamilyMart inside the hotel, which carries some unique regional products. That was quite interesting and a nice detail. The shuttle bus service was always on time, and the drivers were kind and friendly.
The nearby shopping mall, which is part of the hotel area, offers many popular brands at relatively good prices. It feels more like an outlet, with slightly older products, but still great for shopping. There are also a few good restaurant options within the mall.
I did not have breakfast at the hotel, so I cannot comment on that.
Overall, it was a good stay.
JJovaI am very satisfied with this hotel, the location is great, the staff is friendly and the room is comfortable.
The room was very comfortable in terms of lighting, temperature and bedding. I would especially like to praise the housekeeping sister for keeping the room very clean. The room has two terraces, one of which overlooks the Happo-One Ski Resort.
We stayed for six nights and the breakfast food was roughly the same every day, but also rich. We had dinner at different restaurants in the hotel on three nights. On the first night, we had a buffet dinner in the hotel with a wide variety of food. On the second night, we had Western food at The Forest next to the hotel. On the third night, we had Japanese food at The Forest next to the hotel. The prices in all three restaurants were not expensive but the food was delicious.
The Dry Room for ski equipment is outside the hotel. It is a real drying room with a machine for drying snowshoes. It is not the so-called Dry Room in some hotels which is actually just a Locker room.
YYokkkyyyWorthy, nice food and service.
I love every details they put, walking on tatami and great decoration. And I can say this chain is one of the best hotel in japan.
- Even room is small but lower bed makes it more spacious. And with no view room you still got sunlight dont worry.
- Location is good, walkable from the station.
- Breakfast is amazing! Freshly fried Tempura is authentic, also Gyudon and others also great. I love apple juice too.
- Dont forget night soba and treats after onsen.
- Onsen is good too but only indoor.
- The rest area beside onsen is fantastic, in the morning with the view of Japanese alps they even have name of each mountain so cute.
- Tips for restaurants nearby, there are izakaya food court like gathering all izakaya in one place and yiu can choose what you like
SSSLinethegreatHad a really pleasant stay overall. The place was very clean and well-maintained, and the location was convenient for getting around. Service was excellent 👍 staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Amenities were also complete and comfortable. Would definitely recommend for couples looking for a smooth and enjoyable stay.
GGuest UserExcellent! The environment is beautiful! The room is clean! The service is great! The food is decent! The hotel facilities are very comprehensive! It feels wonderful to look out at the snow-capped mountains! Very comfortable! It's very close to the ski resort!
GGuest UserI stayed in a twin room on September 1, 2025. It was very busy with tourists, and the front desk was congested. The food buffet was more about quantity than quality, so I ended up overeating. I could hear the movement of guests on the floor above me and the sound of water leaking from the drain pipes. Water was leaking from the floor of the unit bathroom. The toilet was child-sized, and the hot water was a little hot, but I would definitely stay here again.
