My wife and I came to live in Devon, happily discovering The Ilsington hotel only seven minutes walk away. After three or four visits and stays, we have been hugely impressed by the comfort of the rooms, the range of facilities in the hotel and spa, the quality of the two restaurants, and above all by the excellence of service from the staff who create an atmosphere of calm combined with impeccable efficiency. An unexpected but perfect neighbour.

Being used to the likes of other budget hotel chains when on business trips I was looking forward to my stay however feel let down given the prestigious reputation of the Mercure brand. The hotel building itself is beautiful and the room was modern in decor, however unfortunately the building fabric had not been modernised leading to an uncomfortable night. The room was very warm with a single window that only opened slightly and no air conditioning/fan provided. Even on a cold September night the room was uncomfortably warm into the early hours. My room was positioned opposite what seemed to be the kitchen/some sort of generator/heater which kicked in at 6am in the morning waking me up as the window had to remain open to keep the room cool. The range of breakfast was good (cooked breakfast, pastries, cereals, continental), but sadly the quality was quite poor. Despite being the first person at 8am on a Sunday the food was cold overall and the sausages and bacon were very tough and leathery. The staff on every interaction were helpful and polite, especially the receptionist when checking in. Overall a disappointing stay and sadly not the first poor experience at an Accor hotel.

My wife and I were looking for a somewhere quiet for a couple of nights and found it at Moorland. The staff were so nice and professional, the room was immaculate, spotless and very nicely equipped with fantastic views across the Moors. All meals were excellent and staff first class. We have stayed in Hotels around the World and the Moorland is 10 out of 10.

My wife and I stopped at the Abbey Inn for a celebration meal with two friends and had a wonderful evening. We had booked and were met by Kelly, the landlady who was so friendly and helpful. We had a three course meal which was truly delicious and the chef took time out to come and see us. The pub is right by the river, has a great car park and is very clean and full of ambience. It turned out that the chef that night was the landlord, Phil who, like his wife, was very friendly; in fact all the staff were friendly and helpful. Anyone who is visiting Devon and is travelling between Exeter and Plymouth would be hard placed to find a better venue for a relaxing meal and a clean, pleasant room. I was lucky enough to receive a gift voucher for Bovey Castle as a gift and what better way to spend it than enjoying a festive afternoon tea. Bovey Castle located within Dartmoor National Park is a stunning 5 Red Star, award winning country manor hotel, spa and golf resort, offering a first class luxury experience. We were greeted and welcomed by friendly doorman whom took our details and temperatures before we entered as part of their covid 19 precautions which was very reassuring. Once we were given the all clear we were shown to the Great Western Restaurant and told we were free to enjoy and explore the hotel. Full of country charm and character finished off with beautiful seasonal decorations, a stunning setting for a festive feast. Service was friendly and prompt. We were given the choice of tea's and coffee, and the option to add champagne, presecco or a glass of mulled wine to enhance your experience for a small charge. Afternoon tea was presented nicely, a delicious feast for the eyes and tasted even better than it looked. We opted for a glass of mulled wine to add an extra bit of festive cheer, which was full of seasonal flavours. The savoury tier offered the following finger sandwiches; Roast turkey and cranberry Mature cheddar cheese and onion Oak smoked salmon and lemon butter Honey roast ham and pickle Served with Chestnut and Clementine Sausage Roll and a Pear and Blue Cheese Quiche. Everything was super tasty and full of flavour. Our favourite being the chestnut and Clementine sausage roll. This was followed by the traditional Fruit and plain scones served with ample clotted cream and mulled wine jam. The jam was fruity with a hint of festive spice, delicious and novel although a little runny. This was accompanied by a slice of traditional stollen, a favourite of mine. The sweet tier offered Yule log with orange and vanilla butter cream Honey and cinnamon macaroon Cherry and pistachio choux Spiced apple mince pie Everything was delicious, nothing was too rich, we loved the honey a cinnamon macaroon with indulgent honey and cinnamon ganache. We really enjoyed our experience, and everything offered as part of our afternoon tea, stunning setting, great food and service. Would recommend and definitely come back for a special occasion. Perfect for a special treat.

Having stayed at the Jury's Inn chain of hotels previously in other cities we decided to stay at the hotel when we visited Exeter. The hotel enjoys a great location and the facilities are ok but unfortunately the servicing leaves a lot to be desired. There is no mention of this anywhere on their website and you are not told at any stage when you book and you only find out once you have paid and visit your room. On entering your room you find a nicely laminated note from the management advising you that your rooms will not be serviced on short stays. The management are using the excuse of the Covid pandemic to save costs and avoid doing your beds, emptying your bins, changing your towels, replenishing your toilet paper and the complimentary tea/ coffee. This is now only provided on request.My previous experience of this chain of hotels was that you also had a small fridge in the room and you were provided with complimentary bottles of water, this is no longer the case. Effectively the client experience has been watered down yet the prices remain the same. The client experience received from the staff was inconsistent, some were great others were very unhelpful. The hotel is not cheap and based on their current offering way overpriced.

I was very impressed by this hotel. It has a good location if you travel by car or rail. Even though it overlooks a major road intersection there was no noise in the bedroom. The bed room was quite large and the air conditioning was very effective and quiet. The staff were very friendly, efficient and helpful. It was very clean throughout. The dining area is quite small and there were warnings of some delays in getting a table. I didn’t have any problem when I staid the night after August Bank Holiday.
