Went on a surprise staycation this weekend for my birthday at the brand new Hotel Magdalena. This place really impressed me- I’m surprised to be the first reviewer. Magdalena is right off South Congress Avenue, but it feels like an oasis all on its own. The whole hotel has a cool retro 70s aesthetic- with the lobby and features of the room like old school lamps and our exposed wood balcony as stand outs. That’s a difficult era to pull off, but I think they did it well. Everyone was warm and friendly at check in, and they had plenty of dog treats for the pooch. Shout out to Ryan at the desk. As far as the room, I loved the blue tile bathroom and our view of the skyline. The bed was a little firm, but we still got a good night’s sleep. As far as COVID, everyone was wearing masks and signs were posted all around the buildings, and I saw staff cleaning public areas multiple times during my stay. They also have time slots (2 hours) for guests to use the pool. I’m guessing this is to limit guest contact. Favorite highlights included the large pool in the middle of the courtyard (heated, with LED lights) and the restaurant, Summer House on Music Lane. The food is out-of-this-world good. If you stay here, have a meal- you won’t regret it. We got the steak and the bass with cocktails. Amazing. Our server, Laura, was knowledgeable and accommodating too. Right off of South Congress, amenities that can’t be beat, and dog-friendly- Hotel Magdalena is a real gem in the heart of Texas. I look forward to staying again!

Rainey Street Historic District
In the words of Bette Davis, “What a Dump.” In its favor, we had a nice view of Lady Bird Lake from our window, which was pretty to wake up to, and the water pressure in the shower was great! The bathroom seemed partially updated and was pretty decent. Free parking, too. There were a few HBO channels on tv. However, the hotel is very dated and not very clean looking. The indoor parking garage was filthy and was dimly lit. Didn’t feel very safe in there, so we parked in the outside lot whenever possible. No greeting from the night time desk clerk when we came back from dinner, as she seemed to purposely be avoiding eye contact with us (she wasn’t on the phone or busy with someone else). The elevators were very smudgy and too dark, also. The beds slumped a bit in the middle, the linens were old and tired looking, and the chair in the corner looked worse than some I’ve put by the curb. An old leak on the ceiling was poorly patched up, and there were stains on the desk chair, carpet and walls. The door to the adjoining room didn’t provide enough sound proofing, as I heard our neighbor’s phone convo loud and clear. The pool area didn’t look very inviting, as there were no umbrellas or trees to block the strong sun. We wanted to stay in downtown Austin to be within walking distance to things, so this was the least expensive option. But not much could be walked to from there, and the area it was in was a bit sketchy, so we ended up taking Ubers, anyway. We had booked our last night at a hotel in the Arboretum area, because this one went up to a ridiculously high amount for Friday night (music festival in town), and it ended up being just as convenient to take an Uber from there (15-20 mins) to downtown. Plus, the hotel was much nicer and way less expensive. Live and learn.

Our stay at the Hyatt Regency on our wedding night was phenomenal! We were hoping for maybe some champagne or something special since it was our wedding night, but it was still a great experience overall. We booked this last minute for a night in Austin. This was about $50+ more expensive than another Best Western in Austin about 6 miles away but saw the great reviews and was in good proximity to SOCO. Check-in was quick and easy. We were told there were no king beds so we took the two singles (which we get as it being last minute). The room was quirky and fun as far as decor goes. The room was clean. The water pressure was pretty low in our room. Shower flow was ok but pressure sub-par. We also had to flush the toilet twice in order for it to flush anything down. Not all of the doors leading to courtyard rooms required key use (even though it had the card reader) so people without a room key could walk into the area by our room. Not sure if the door locks were broken or just not armed. The gardeners started working in courtyard right by our room at a little after 7am and you could hear blowers and/or trimmers. This was annoying as we are on vacation and would have liked to have the option to sleep in. We got up and checked out. We took the grab and go breakfast as opposed to having hot breakfast. I cannot comment on how the breakfast is but I am sure it is good as Best Western usually has a pretty decent breakfast. The grab and go was an apple, small water and granola bar and the date on the sticker was from 2 days prior. I would not stay here again, there are better options in the area that are less expensive.
