We have stayed at this pub several times over the years and really enjoyed the ambience. So we decided to book again with friends and hoped to replicate our previous experience. How wrong we were! We were met with unsmiling and unwelcoming staff. Like a previous reviewer, we were offered real ale in a paper cup, really!! Nothing to do with health and safety, again the excuse was that they didn’t have enough beer glasses. The rooms were tired and shabby, mould on the bathroom ceiling, sash windows again propped open with a wooden block. I ordered chicken and leek pie for my evening meal. It was covered in soggy cabbage and the pie was freezing cold on one side of the plate and hot on the other. When I sent the meal back, the chef/proprietor came to see me and seemed indignant that I had the temerity to return my food. To be fair, I was offered a refund. Next morning at breakfast, there were flies on the bread and cheese, no attempt to cover the food up. We were coldly told, 'Its summer, these things happen'. Very expensive at £140 bed and breakfast, £70 would have been nearer the mark for the experience we had. Our experience warranted zero stars, if that had been possible and it totally spoiled our experience in what is a lovely part of North Yorkshire.
