Stay at Mare

The owner chose to rent this unit when it was still unfinished. The floors are bare concrete, some of the walls unpainted. There are holes in the wall due to door stops not being installed. No desk, chair, closet, wastebasket, or towel racks. Customers should know that there is no on-site parking. Parking is available on- street but in short supply in this busy neighborhood. I walked one to three blocks to find a on-street spot, dragging my luggage. When I asked to check out early since the unit was unfinished, I was told there are no refunds. There is no on-site desk. I do not recommend staying at Stay at Mare. It is inferior to the cheapest hotel room.

Not a good place for folks with limited mobility. Very spartan quarters. Noisy, few amenities in the room, terrible platform beds, no storage, no fridge, bring your own entertainment, and street parking only. Our room lacked blackout cover for a frosted glass door so we had a lot of light at night. Clean, great location, BUT NOISY and very hard to reach the 2nd floor with luggage (or without) --no elevator. We booked 8 nights, left after 2. We were that unhappy with accommodations.

I booked through *******, but upon arrival, I discovered there was no reception by the building or entrance. As I hadn't received a code to access the gate, I had to call the hotel for assistance. The employee I spoke with instructed me to create a user account on ******* to obtain the code, even though I hadn't received any code initially. Despite attempting to call back seven times, I had no luck reaching them. Suddenly, I received another call apologizing for not receiving my billing information from *******. To proceed, they requested that I email a picture of my credit card. It's important to note that it's not advisable to send credit card information via email. As a result, they eventually canceled my reservation. Ironically, the only positive outcome was that I had to find another hotel at 6 pm.

For starters this is not your average hotel, more like a motel room. minus a fridge or microwave. Just white cement walls that felt like a box. There are no amenities other than that pool that I never seen anyone inside of, so I stayed away. Hair was everywhere, bathroom, sheets. You can’t hide much using white sheets The AC remote was a universal remote and not connected to the ac. We had to program it from codes we looked up. It’s in the 80s in PR. So an ac set on 80 was not going to work, I’m glad we even figure out what was going on with the air. The shower is more like a very low pressure sprinkler. The best part of this place is that it’s close to everything. I have no idea why they installed these door knobs on these doors, that felt like a whole maze to use. The email said it was European, idk I’ve been to London and never seen such a difficult knob. Overall We made the best of it, it’s amazing what you can get use to.

The location was great. Not in a touristy area but with restaurants and shops near by. The beach is 2 blocks away. The rooms are not huge but adequate. We did not spend much time in our rooms as we wanted to experience San Juan. The pool was nice to have. There are 2 outdoor areas, one by the pool in front, and another out back with a dining table and chairs, refrigerator, sink, microwave, toaster, and cook top, along with glasses, dishes, and cookware. There is no lobby or restaurant, but 2 breakfast and lunch places at the end of the street. This is not a touristy area, but in the middle of a neighborhood, which we appreciated. If you want full amenities, book the Marriott; if you want to feel like you are in Puerto Rico, stay here.

Do not recommend! This is not a typical hotel it’s more of an Airbnb style. We booked for three nights and only stayed two because we felt so uncomfortable. First night-When we arrived we got in at around 2 am. The floors and side tables were dirty and there was hair on the bed. It was 2 so I couldn’t reach out to anyone for help. We cleaned what was bothering us. Second night- At 3 am there was banging on our door so loud we thought it was an emergency. Our “neighbors” were pounding on all the doors.We reached out to the contact given to us and no response. I texted the contact given to me. When I expressed my concerns they were dismissive until I mentioned the hair on the bed and they gave us the code to another room which was in better condition. It was our last night anyways. We did not feel safe at the hotel anymore and found somewhere else to sleep… Overall do not recommend and are non refundable for a reason! Also picture attached is the face of a lady who’s was completely rude to us and insulted us

I've stayed at Mare for 5 different weeks this year, staying a different rooms (#33, 32, 27, 22, 21). It's my go to place in San Juan. Having traveled for 30 years on business, Mare meets and exceeds my expectations. For the rate, you cannot find a better deal. The hotel is clean, modern furnishings and has all you need if looking for a basic service hotel and not wanting to pay resort fees and other hidden costs. It is located on great, quiet residential street. You can feel like a local. Once you find your morning coffee and breakfast hangout (Regina across the street), you can head out to the beach (down the street) or venture further to Condado (walking 10 to 15 mins). I rent a car while in Puerto Rico and have no trouble finding street parking (avoid exorbitant hotel overnight parking fees). If you are expecting a pool boy or room service, this is not your place.

We really enjoyed our stay here. Close to the airport, super close to the beach, lots to eat around in the area. If you want to visit other parts of the city, it’s pretty easy with Uber (most rides were about $5). Think about this place like a mix between a boutique hotel and an Airbnb. The kitchen you see is outdoors and shared and I loved that unique touch. There are two fridges, a restroom, and a laundry room all in the open space. staying here gave us a unique perspective on the area- we met some great neighbors who were staying at the mare. Although the staff you see primarily on location speak Spanish- they were extremely helpful and patient with the language barrier. My only suggestion would be to add a foot wash somewhere in the area.. I could tell people were using the pool to rinse sand off after visiting the beach. If you can, definitely book a room with a terrace- that was my favorite part. Would definitely stay here again!

I liked that I was given a very nice new room right away once I informed them that the ac was not working.I also lived there was a pool in the property.I didn’t like that my original room didn’t have air for two (2) nights & the room was SUPER small & not modern. I also didn’t like there was no designated parking.
