Radfords on the Lake

Te Anau|0.32km de Te Anau Glowworm Caves - RealNZ
I have been to Te Anau on two prior trips (early January 2017 and 2020) and always wanted to stay here given its reviews. However, lodging in the town is often nearly fully booked more than a month out. On my first trip, I had to use Airbnb. On this trip, I was excited when I was able to book a room in Radfords on the Lake. However, the day before my flight, Air New Zealand cancelled our flight from North America making our road trip impossible given ferry reservations. Kerri, the owner, graciously cancelled my reservation without fee despite being just inside the non-refundable 14-day window. We did manage to book a new trip to New Zealand a couple months later months in March and were happy to stay at Radfords. Kerri was very personable and remembered us from prior phone calls. Our one bedroom suite was nice and comfortable after a somewhat long drive from Wanaka. The hotel has laundry facilities, which we took advantage of. The hotel is located right next to the lake with the town center a few blocks away. Most people are passing through Te Anau to visit Milford Sound and it’s a good stop for two nights to break up the drive. This gives you more time to enjoy the area around Milford Sound, potential to wait for better weather and do some hikes along the way, such as Key Summit. On my first trip, I caught the first cruise of the day on Milford sound and followed it up in the afternoon with a kayak trip the length of the sound. My second trip was a night between completing the Routeburn Track and starting the Milford Track. Of the four days, I spent in Milford Sound one was raining and you could only briefly see the peaks. This also roughly aligns with my four days on the Milford track where one day it poured rain and another day was cloudy obstructing peaks. In summary, if going to Milford Sound spend a night or two in Te Anau to have a better chance at having a good experience when visiting Milford Sound. When I return to Te Anau (likely winter to see the classic snow on Mitre Peak), the first place I would look to stay would be Radfords on the Lake.

Bella Vista Motel Te Anau

I stayed here for about a week over late December 2021 and early January 2022. New Zealand was still largely closed to international tourists due to COVID-19 border restrictions and a number of accomodation providers were't open. There was good availability with accomodation providers that were open. Te Anau was busy without being crowded, very pleasant. In many ways the Bella Vista Motel is a delightful place to stay. The owners are friendly, welcoming and helpful. It's only five minutes walk from the town which has a good supermarket and some excellent cafes, restaurants and food caravans. The bed was incredibly luxurious with a comfortable mattress and 5 star hotel quality sheets and linen. However, the room was small. There wasn't a lot of additional space apart from the bed. One of the reasons I choose a motel rather than a hotel was because of cooking facilities. Most motel units have a kitchen or kitchenette. The Bella Vista has different kinds of rooms, some with full kitchen facilities and others with more limited cooking options, and their online reservation system did specify these. Moreover, due to browser issues I found booking online to be quite complicated. When I checked into my room I found that the kitchen facilities were extremely limited, almost non existent. I could make coffee and tea and prepare toast in the morning on the extremely small bench space and that was it. There might have been a microwave, but I don't use microwaves so it wasn't an option. I ended up getting most of my meals for dinner at the amazing Bao Now caravan, some of the best street food I've ever had anywhere. The kitchenette area, a small bench above a fridge also did not have its own tap, water or sink. I had to get water and wash dishes in the bathroom sink, just along from the toilet, which wasn't particularly pleasant. The other aspect about the rooms were that, at least surrounding the room I was staying in, there was virtually no soundproofing. I could hear almost everything in other rooms - conversations (even when people were speaking quietly), television, showers and flushing toilets. This was not generally a problem as fellow guests were quiet and respectful and lights seemed to be out by 10pm. The limited soundproofing (at least in the room I was staying in) didn't cause any major problems sleeping, but it could if the rooms were occupied by guests who like to stay up late. Generally the lack of full kitchen facilities, small room size and limited soundproofing didn't cause any problems as I was out everyday hiking, cycling, and going on float plane and helicopter trips. However, when staying for a reasonable amount of time in a place (such as a week) I sometimes like to have a break mid-week and relax for a day where I'm staying. This wasn't really that possible here. Admittedly I did get the smallest and cheapest room. I would have paid more for a larger room with full kitchen facilities (these are availa

Te Anau Lakeview Holiday Park & Motels

We stayed in our hired campervan for 3 nights. It is a very clean and well maintained site with nice views over the lake, a 15 minute walk from the facilities of Te Anau. The shower blocks are very clean and warm and well equipped with hairdryers etc. Staff were extremely knowledgeable and helpful, for example for our walk to the Kepler Track nearby, and in booking a Milford Sound Cruise for us at no extra cost.

The hotel has plenty of space and good service. I washed the pots and bowls for me. I'm sorry. The parking is very convenient. After dinner, I can eat at the small counter outside the door. It is very pleasant

Warm, spacious, clean and comfortable. The bed was the most comfortable I've had on this trip, the heat pump had the room toasty on arrival. Kitchenette was perfect and had everything I needed to cook a meal. Gorgeous view of the lake and town, very close to the bird sanctuary and and easy walk to the centre. Feels separate from the holiday park and a really good value for money deal.

Alpine View Motel

The location is in Te Aru, there is no lake view to see, it takes about 2 or 3 minutes to walk to the lake, the door just happens to be parking, the open kitchen, the kitchen is a bit like a bar, only the toaster can toast and soak. It is not too convenient to boil water and cook with utensils. There is a wardrobe, but there is a quilt in the wardrobe, and the hangers cannot be taken out. There is no drying rack. The most dissatisfied is the toilet, the washbasin is too short, the hot and cold water is difficult to adjust, and the bending is very uncomfortable, not because I am tall, my height is medium, and then there is only one bathtub, but really how many now Individuals can lie in the bathtub? Most have showers, so you can only stand in the bathtub and shower, and the toilet is in the bathroom next door. To be honest, motels are everywhere in Te Anau. But in high mountain areas, it is not too demanding.
