First of all...if you can avoid San Jose, then it is imperative you do, otherwise, yes - this is probably the best backpacker trio you can find - meaning, the street only contains pretty much three adjacent buildings, which are all operated by the same business partnership and consequently the facilities are interchangeable and can be utilised by all. Costa Rica Backpackers has a kitchen, a bar and a restaurant from 17:00-21/22:00, free luggage storage, and free ear plugs. There is hot water too and a pool. Lights and sound generally has to go out completely at 22:30. The place is very busy and you likely will not be able to extend your booking for the next day, some times, the next few days. The staff are fine and card is accepted without fees. I don't have too many qualms to be honest. The beds/pillow did smell unpleasant though - that would be it I guess. You really don't have any better options for backpacker accommodation for the price paid in San Jose. WiFi was good too.
