Moffat Independent Hostel

After the fantastic reviews we had seen on the booking site, we were very much looking forward to our stay. Unfortunately, I think we may have caught the owners on a bad day. When checking in we were shown around and in the kitchen there was complimentary tea and coffee! When it came to making a coffee, we discovered there was no milk. When I asked for this I was told we were expected to bring our own. As a couple staying for one night and travelling on a motorbike this isn’t very practical. However, if this has been explained earlier we would have happily bought a bottle when we were in the village, but for just 2 coffees in the morning this would have been very wasteful for us. The room smelt of damp and when closing the shutters for the evening we discovered why, there was a serious problem with damp next to the window. The curtains also did not close properly. In the morning I went to have a shower but there was no hot water - I did not feel comfortable enough to approach the owners about this after our confrontation the previous evening over the missing milk when we were unfortunately made to feel very unwelcome, so much so we spent the entire evening in the room. We would have enjoyed some pool in their games room but at £10 per hour we felt this was a bit cheeky - it would have been better to find a pub and pay 50p a go! While not a big deal for others, we found the request for the bed to be *****ped rather unusual although we did comply. I understand the current owners are fairly new but the way we were treated was not something I would expect anywhere.

Hands down the best hostel in Scotland. Very clean fresh rooms, ensuite. Hot powerful shower. Fantastic well stocked kitchen. Homely sitting room. Plenty of space to park. Friendly welcoming hostest. Highly recommend!

The hosts have kept the charater of the building, preserving the original features. Wonderfully styled living room, dining room and hallways. Well equipped kitchen with everything you need for cooking. All bedroom are with ensuit WC and showers, many of them with baths. Excellent location for outdoor activitirs, outside living or just chilling out.

What a beautiful Victorian house, recently renovated to create a welcoming lovely Hostel. Each room has an en-suite and the furniture, the beds and the bathrooms are all new. The communal kitchen has tea, coffee and milk provided and towels are provided too. It’s a class above your regular hostel, and prices are very reasonable. Locked storage for bicycles and motorbikes is an added bonus. It’s just great!

Tom and Sindy have perfectly blended the comfort & quality of a hotel with the freedom & convenience of self catering. Perfect location, lovely a**osphere, great hosts &super comfy beds We'll be back!

What a fabulous hostel in a beautiful old house that has been very well maintained! Our room was huge (a superior quad) with 2 bunkbeds, a large comfy couch, an armchair, and a table and chairs in the bay window. There was also a gorgeous ensuite bathroom with a freestanding bath as well as a shower. The beds were comfortable, the shower was hot with good pressure and the outlook was lovely. There was a fully stocked kitchen where we cooked dinner, a dining room, and a beautiful sitting room with comfortable couches, a piano, books, and a great record collection. We were able to store our bikes safely and park our car onsite. The staff were lovely and very helpful. We wished we could have stayed longer. Thanks so much.

I was bowled over by the quality of the building, the interior decor and the facilities (which included a beautifully decorated pool/games room). It really was superior accommodation for a modest sum of money. and I very much look forward to staying here again.

We booked the whole hostel for a running club weekend in moffat - what a great place. It ticked all the boxes for a fun trip away near the hills. The rooms, loung and kitchen were fantastic and the owner Tom was super helpful. Great value too. Overall, we had a excellent weekend! Thanks Tom

A fantastic Hostel, and a great place to explore the lovely surrounding countryside. Friendly staff, beautiful old building, lovely rooms, including a beautiful pool room/lounge. Lovely roll top bath with a view.
