Went to the keepers for a quiet drink in the bar first impressions of the place were very good a big improvement to how it once was the last time I visited the bar staff Wes and Holly did a great job a lovely place very welcoming will definitely be back again well done Wes and Holly great staff

We stayed here for one night for a mid week break having heard and read so many things about it. The service we received prior to staying was professional, and set the tone for our entire stay. The concierge greeted us at the door and took our bags up to our room while we enjoyed a drink in the hall by the fire. The place was welcoming and spotless. Our room was perfectly sized (58) and overlooked the front of the hotel. There was gorgeous touches like the alcohol free fizz (I’m expecting) and high quality toiletries in the bathroom. The room was a little warm but the Dyson fan helped! We took advantage of the spa, and dined in the cloisters restaurant which was incredible. A stunning seasonal and well priced menu, with impeccable service to boot. We couldn’t fault it at all! We really enjoyed our time at Matfen and it was the perfect break before our newborn arrives!

Absolutely wonderful afternoon tea! The drawing room was gorgeous, light and airy with a stunning view. We also thought the harpist was a really beautiful addition! Staff were incredibly friendly, attentive and professional. Lastly we certainly couldn't fault the food, it was varied, delicious and just the right amount. Overall, an excellent experience, great value for money. Our thanks to all involved for a lovely afternoon.

Myself and my husband have just returned from an absolutely fabulous 1 night stay at this beautiful hotel. Our first impressions were excellent with well tended grounds and an extremely impressive stately building. Upon arrival we received a really warm welcome from Desmond and the lady on reception. It was lovely not to have to wait at reception to check in, but instead being shown straight through to very impressive Grand Hall with a roaring fire to enjoy a welcome drink whilst our bags were taken to our room. Our room was beautifully decorated (no expense spared with quality of the soft furnishings, bed, bed linen, furniture etc) and immaculately clean. The building itself is Gothic architecture and is stunning inside and out. I love how the hotel blends seamlessly from Traditional interior style to modern style. It was a gorgeous sunny day, so we enjoyed drinks at The Keepers on the outdoor patio area overlooking the golf course. It was very peaceful and relaxing. We ate dinner in The Keepers which was superb, and service was efficient and very friendly. Thank You to Nick who kindly offered to drive us down to The Keepers as it was a chilly evening. The hotel has a lovely warm, and relaxed feel to it and this is due to all the staff who came across as very friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much bother, and you could tell that they took pride in what they do. We enjoyed an early morning Sunday swim and sauna before enjoying a delicious breakfast. The menu choices were excellent, and again service was very efficient and friendly. All in all we had an absolutely fabulous stay, and thank you to all The Matfen Team for making it perfect! PS I really can’t understand any of the really negative reviews. It just goes to show that you can’t please everyone, so just focus on the majority that you can please!

Having just returned from a two night stay at Matfen Hall we felt we needed to write this honest review. Following a disappointing stay in May 2024 we decided to return and hope things had improved. We were not disappointed. The improvement is quite exceptional. Our welcome was warm, not only by the staff but the fire in the hall, and the rum cocktail was delicious. A very pleasant, helpful young man took our luggage to our room while we were being checked in. The room was tastefully decorated, warm and clean. We started our stay with a visit to bar 1832 for drinks where, once again, the welcome was warm and friendly. Our first evening meal was at The Keepers, a recent addition to Matfen Hall. The food and service were excellent. The menu is varied and reasonably priced and less formal than that served in The Cloisters. The breakfast on both mornings was excellent and much improved. Again staff were friendly and attentive. Our second evening meal was the tasting menu in The Emerald dining room. The food was delicious and the chef happily exchanged the fish dish, as one of us has a fish allergy, with a meat dish. The staff were once again friendly and attentive, especially the Dutch lady whose name I forgot to ask. The management has taken onboard the past criticisms and we can honestly say they have made huge improvements and we would happily return and recommend it to others. Matfen Hall is a very impressive building and the service and food is now what you would expect from a 5* establishment.

My husband and I had a lovely 2 night visit to Matfen Hall. The staff couldn’t have been nicer, so friendly and helpful. The hotel has been recently renovated and is absolutely beautiful. Our room was wonderful, overlooking the gorgeous 18 hole golf course, and fantastic views beyond. Breakfast in the Cloisters was amazing, as were the staff. We enjoyed our time in the swimming pool and spa. We would definitely recommend this hotel.
