We booked the hotel as an early Christmas as we will be in the UK. The check-in was not what I expected from a 4*Superior Hotel, and there was no help with luggage to the room, located on the second floor without a lift. To say our expectation of the room was underwhelming is an understatement. Personally I would not have accommodated my staff in that room. The room was gloomy, lighting like Dickensian times as if it were candlelight, made worse by the attic like sloping ceiling. We searched for plug sockets - there were plenty, but in the most unusual places. Inside drawers, one was even inside the top shelf of the wardrobe - there was no way anyone could have reached it. The carpets are shag pile of a nondescript colour, maybe brown or grey? Very 80’s which compliments the wallpaper very well. The bed is far too low and made of metal, which makes it very uncomfortable to sit on and get in and out of, but would explain why the bed wasn’t made correctly! Being too low I’m sure that housekeeping have back problems because of this. Talking of housekeeping, in a 4*Superior Hotel I expect much better quality towels than those we experienced, both in the room and in the Spa. The towels are threadbare and in some instances stained with black ‘oily’ substance, those in the Spa are grey in colour and turn even darker when wet. To all intents and purposes this is an events space and this comes through loud and clear. The event spaces are individual, private, and professionally organised to the individual/organisation specifications. The hotel plays second fiddle to this business, but in a fast moving environment every business has to adapt to changing conditions. For me the best part of our stay was the food and I would like to thank the Chef and his brigade for the quality of the food they provided in the restaurant, plus the service from the staff who were excellent. Sehr 80er Jahre, was sehr gut zur Tapete passt.
