Jan Harmsgat Country House

Such a beautiful place and setting. Staff were wonderful and couldn’t do enough. Highly recommend this hotel and you have to dine at Just Amy, the onsite restaurant as it’s fabulous. Our room was very spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable. Amenities excellent too.

- Wonderful hilly surroundings, but nothing to do within 30 km. Neither on the location itself - It’s called a 5* property, but we wonder how this is possible - The window had only a luxaflex, which made a lot of light came in the room in the morning - Water pressure was low. Not nice to shower - Separated taps for hot and cold water - WiFi was very bad (availability and speed) - Very spacious room and terrace, but a bit outdated - The staff was amazingly friendly, especially the waitresses in the restaurant

What an unforgettable stay! We stayed in the honeymoon suite and one of the other suites and we had the best time! The staff were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The food was hearty and the wine exceptional (we should’ve bought more when we left!). It’s such a beautiful farm. It was such a highlight for us after a beautiful few weeks in Namibia. Everyone at Jan Harmsgat makes you feel like a part of the family. Many thanks once again and we’ll definitely be back!

Our stay in Jan Harmsgat was very enjoyable. Most of it was due to the location, which offers some peace and quiet away from everything. The whole farm area is beautifully laid out. In addition to the location, the service was a big plus. The staff were totally lovely and welcoming. We felt very well looked after. The food also deserves all the Michelin stars. One minus point, however, was our room, as we had a few insects in it. There were guests next to us on the first night and we could hear them loudly so we didn't get any sleep. Nevertheless, it was a nice room.

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at Jan Harmsgat recently. We were the only guests there for the evening and the staff went way above and beyond to make our stay a fantastic one. They really spoiled us. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms are quite well equipped and comfortable, and the food at the restaurant was great. It's a pity that the property is so close to the highway, so road noise is a consideration, the service, however, more than made up for that.

Beautiful setting near Swellendam. We were part of a group of about 25. I think this made service slow, very slow. Power outages made things worse. Felt sorry for the kitchen. Staff tried hard. Food was good but not outstanding, apart from a lamb shank which was excellent. Line fish the night before was poor. We stayed in Mardouw which is a manor house, jointly managed. What a beautiful place. Well maintained and high end luxury. A restful place to stay.

From the moment we arrived until we left your beautiful property, we were treated like Royalty. The outstanding service, delicious foods, incredible customer service, the team at JHC is top notch and so many establishments can learn from this 5-star gem. Thank you JHC team! My home away from home and a birthday my darling Mom will cherish forever.

We arrived to deserted restuarant at 1pm. This should have been our first hint. I walked into the kitchen and asked for service. We where served by Zimbabwean girl who apologised in advance that this was her first day. Why don't you train your staff? The menu is plain and very unimaginative. We asked for wine list. we were told that there where only two wines, white and red and they only served by the glass R45. No bottles, no champagne. We ordered red, no name and it was served cold ?? We then got told after two glasses of red that its actually R75 glass. We ordered the chicken schnitzel special, we were told that its R105 with mash and veg, then for told its R175 and then got chips. We never saw a manager, the poor waitress tried hard but come on! who runs this place !?

I sent the email below to Jan Harmsgat management 2 days after our stay and still have not even had a role or acknowledgement of our experience. Dear all, We have just returned to Cape Town after a road trip around the Western Cape that included a 3 day stay at Jan Harmsgat and thought that I would share with you what a disappointing experience it was. In comparison, the other two venues that we stayed at were simply levels above the experience that Jan Harmsgat provides at very similar price points. We have travelled extensively in our 20 years in Cape Town and Jan Harmsgat was one of the most disappointing experiences and cases of “over promising and underdelivering” that we have ever experienced. I understand that the 2 ½ years of the Covid pandemic has been tough for the hospitality and travel industry, but if you have been unable to maintain your properties and resources to deliver on a claimed “5 star” guest house then you should not promote it as such and you should certainly not be delivering an experience that leaves customers feeling cheated. By way of example during our 3-day stay: We had selected a room ( suite 9 ) that is presented on your website as a “superior” suite and the most expensive option available, which was why we chose it. However, the room faces directly towards the main Route 60 road and suffers from 24-hour traffic noise that is completely unacceptable. In my view, you are doing your business more harm than good by putting guests in to the 2 suites that face the main road. The fact that your staff started apologising before we had even entered the room says a lot that this is an issue known by you but you persist with misleading marketing. The entire guest house felt tired and mis-managed: On our first night, branches from over-hanging trees were constantly blowing against the roof keeping us awake (when the traffic wasn’t!) – it was an easy 30 min job for the staff to cut the trees the next day – but why wasn’t this done already? The room was ‘shabby” at best, probably priced at about double what it should be, with minor points that would be easy to fix, the small coffee plunger was damaged to the coffee was full of grounds, the blind on the door was falling off, the tiny bathroom has a cheap, wooden sliding door, the small seating area outside the room (and all the other rooms) was messy and covered in fallen leaves that hadn’t been swept for weeks, the outside path to our room was covered in Hadeda droppings which had obviously accumulated over a period of time etc etc The gardens were unkempt, outside the rooms in the house is a great area of garden but it has completely been abandoned and unmanaged. The concrete paths are broken with no lighting at night to show the breaks and cracks. You have restaurant staff that were incapable of making a decent coffee The one saving grace is the restaurant food & service and your non-management staff, especially Leandra, were excellent but shouldn’t have to co
