A central location in this busy town affords good views across the harbour. Unfortunately it also means that parking is difficult, so we had to fin d a public car park a few minutes away. Even unloading luggage is not easy unless a parking space is briefly available outside the hotel. The building and furnishings are a little tired and overall it was overpriced for what it was. Staff were pleasant and helpful and the breakfast was very good.

I hate to have to leave this review, but given how I was treated at the Royal Hotel, I feel I must warn other travelers. We stayed here for two nights on a tour of Isle of Skye. Our check-in began a bit ominously as the two people ahead of us in line were complaining about the warm temperature in their rooms. Sure enough, on the second morning, there was no hot water for a shower, and three of us were looking forward to taking one. I got dressed and went down to the front desk, but there was no one there. I then went into the dining room, and asked the young gentleman if there was anyone who might be able to help me figure out the situation with the hot water. He didn't know how to help me, and the man who manages the dining room (tall, thin, French accent) emerged from the kitchen. I nicely explained the situation (no hot water, no one behind the front desk), and asked if there was anyone who could help me. He said, seemingly annoyed, that if there was no one at the front desk then - no - there was no one who could help me. I then asked very nicely if it was possible from him to check in the back office area to see if anyone might be back there who could assist. He refused and stated curtly and rudely "IT'S NOT MY PROBLEM." Wow. I've stayed in a lot of hotels in my life, but never had someone treat me that rudely. Ironically, it's not like he didn't know how the front desk functions as he was the one who checked us in when we arrived!!! I left the dining room angry at how I had been treated and managed to find a side door to the back office with a doorbell. I rang it and a very nice woman came out and explained, while apologizing profusely, that they had a problem with the water system and hot water wouldn't be available for a while. I was disappointed for sure as we couldn't take showers, but I understood that sometimes this happens and I thanked her for giving me an honest explanation. As for the dining room host, it's amazing that he works in the hospitality industry at a hotel that caters to tourists to the Isle of Skye. Perhaps they can send him away for some lessons on how to treat hotel guests who, by the way, are paying very high prices to stay at a highly mediocre accommodation.

I am a regular customer for 10 years or more at Cut Above, the hair dressers within the hotel, Karen (the owner) is a professional hairdresser and takes passion in her work. Well I was absolutely appalled today when I went to get my hair done, firstly to see a notice at the reception to say that there is no hot water in the hotel between 10.30pm and 6.30 am and then when I went to get my hair rinsed after my trea**ent there was no hot water. Karen had to boil kettles to get hot water to take the trea**ent of my hair, this is not acceptable in an hotel and it is not the first time this has happened, it is a numerous occurrence. It is a disgrace. Karen is losing business because of this and is certainly not attracting any potential customers.

Nice new comfortable room. Very friendly staff and a lovely Scottish breakfast. Close to all the amenities in the centre of Portree. Good value for money at the Chris**as and New year holidays. Would definitely consider using the hotel again when going through Skye.

The Royal hotel is a very good hotel in the heart of Portree. We had a very good wheelchair accessible room. Royal has quite a good breakfast. Like all of Scotland, parking is difficult so plan ahead. One downside is the bar. Probably the worst bar on Portree., such a shame in a very good hotel

Sadly, I found Scotland in general to be very unfriendly and very unaccommodating to handicap people. My sister has mobility issues and we found almost no place had lifts or accommodations for her. Part of the problem was that our travel agent and Rabbies tours did not communicate her handicap to the hotels they booked for us. This leads me to the Royal in Portree. What a horrible hotel and experience. Mo at the front desk was so helpful but that is about where it ends. When we arrived, Mo told us that she communicated to our travel agent and Rabbies that they did not have a lift and my sister was going to have to climb 4 flights of stairs to get to her room. She cannot climb stairs. Mo shared the emails letting Rabbies know they did not have a lift so that other accommodations could be made and Rabbies told her simply that it was ok and we would make do with where they booked us. Really??? Imagine finding yourself thousands of miles away from home in a port town that is sold out and you have no way to make it up the stairs! So, Mo in her goodness, found a "driver" room - no windows and small, dank space - to let my sister stay for the two nights we were scheduled to be there. My husband and I could climb stairs so even though we paid for porterage, there we were lugging 28 days' worth of luggage up four flights of stairs just to arrive in a room with a filthy bedroom floor, hair all over the bathroom floor, and it looked as though the beds had not been changed. I am not one to complain about those things much but I did go down and ask simply to have a broom so I could sweep. Our beds were not made into a king as requested and mine had at least five springs you could fully see sticking up about three inches. Needless to say, we paid a lot of money for a horrible return. I will be writing my review very soon on Rabbies tours as well. Stay away from this hotel. When we checked out, I asked the girl at the front desk to consider changing the mattresses and she looked shocked. After reading all the reviews on this hotel, you cannot tell me they do not already know how old their beds are. Sad ending to what was supposed to be a trip of a lifetime.

This was stop #3 of 7 on our 2 week trip and was our least favorite. There is nothing wrong or bad about this hotel - it was clean, room was large enough, and it had a TV that worked. But think Jersey shore or Myrtle Beach and you'll get the picture. Attached bar is a locals hang out so that was fun. Dining room was excellent so definitely consider eating here - book a dinner table in advance!
