Mauritius has changed since my last visit over 25 years ago. It's no longer unspoilt natural beaches and traffic congestion is more of a problem. Having made the above statement Hotel Anelia is a modern comfortable hotel with some good facilities. The staff always greeted us with smiles and greetings. The waiting staff and bar staff were very attentive, Delphinne makes an exceptional cocktail. We had an outstanding room attendant Andy (room 355). Amul always greeted us and offered assistance whenever we saw him in reception. Location is right on the sea front however the natural beach is very small where you can access the sea for a swim. The hotel have made sand terraces with loungers for sun bathing. There are also plenty of loungers around the infinity pools. The morning towel brigade were not present and throughout the day we had no problems getting a place. Our room did not live up to the 4 star rating, it needs a lot of TLC. The wardrobe space consists of a number of shelves, some with ill fitting doors and a hanging rail for dresses. Our bathroom was basic but supplies regularly replenished, the shower developed a leak which resulted in water flood in entrance hall. We reported the fault and was attended to quickly, however was not fixed and required a second report. We also reported the fridge not working and this was replaced immediately with a new unit. It was restocked daily with beers and cold drinks. Food in buffet was mediocre, vegetarians are well catered for. We found the cooking stations cooked meats, chicken and fish too well for us. It was obvious the food was reworked from day to day. Wednesday and Saturdays the buffet moves to the beach which was nice. A visit to the "burger bar" near the pools is well worth it and food was excellent. This does require booking a day before. Evening entertainment was limited, the dance troop were very good showing the cultural dances. We feel the musician/singer could be improved. We ventured out from the hotel only once but were disappointing with surrounds. A beach walk to Flik en Flac was OK coral and rocks made it difficult without shoes. We didn't find cultural markets in the area. We went on three day excursions "discovering" features of Mauritius visiting lichee winery, old sugar factory and rum distillery, volcano crater, craft shops and would recommend a Catamaran cruise to south West of Island. Overall we had a great holiday but feel Anelia Hotel needs an upgrade to their accommodation and suggest the food in the buffet be improved.
