We liked being just outside of the West entrance. The hotel is old and the floors are creaky, but we expected that. Yes, the train is loud and runs at night but we were so tired we didn't need the ear plugs or white noise. The staff was very friendly. The room (Queen bed ~ very comfortable) was TINY with two uncomfortable chairs. I am glad I reserved a room with a patio, as it made it feel not quite so closed in, and the chairs out there were more comfortable. And the patio was covered so we could sit out there even if it was raining. There was complimentary coffee which was delicious from 6-11. There were also muffins. We likes being walking distance to the Highlands Restaurant just down the road. The lobby/ lounge area was very cute with a sometimes lit fireplace and seating for about 8 people. They had a very small gift selection. They have a common room/game room downstairs(no elevators on property) with ping pong, table shuffle board, scrabble, and ice machine and a microwave. The only thing I wished they had was a refrigerator so we could have purchased food and stored it there (there are none in the room) and had it ready for an early morning take off to hiking. It's good to head out early. Even hitting the road at 8:00, most of the trailhead parking lots were practically, if not totally, full. We were there September 11-15, and the traffic on the Road to the Sun Road was not too bad at all and after September 10 you don't need to get passes to go on the road. I had heard the summer passes get snatched up in two minutes. I made my chalet reservations almost a year in advance.
