My wife and I dined at the hotel yesterday, not for the first time, and in celebration of my 81st birthday. A simple meal, nibbles, main, dessert and a glass of wine. I ordered the steak, medium rare, as I usually have it. On delivery I asked for English mustard, which failed to arrive. A medium rare steak should have a seared surface and a pinkish-red juicy centre. The steak was tough, dry, fibrous, stringy and difficult to cut let alone chew and several times I had to abandon the attempt and return a mouthful surreptitiously to the plate. I have in all my years never had anything worse. Our waiter confirmed he had relayed my 'medium rare' request to the chef and offered a free dessert - the credit for which I didn't notice on the bill. I had looked forward to the steak as my wife is vegeterian, and I don't expect meat at home, hence the event. Not wishing for her to pay for a memorably awful meal I paid the bill myself.
