I've stayed at Sonesta throughout Colombia, and normally it's a great experience. The one in Cartagena is completely different, though. This is the cheapest feeling Sonesta I've ever seen. Let's start in the rooms. These are obviously apartments they've converted to a hotel room, and whoever the architect was that designed the interior space should never work again. There is so much wasted space in the room itself, then they cram the closet into the bathroom with a door that opens against the bathroom door, so only one person can get ready at once, and you can't get to your clothes unless you are closed inside the bathroom. Only an insane person would design this. Half the plug-ins don't work. The cord for hanging wet clothes in the shower has been pulled from the wall, which has holes in it. So you can only hang clothes on the balcony. Speaking of which, the balcony is large, but it has a light you have NO control over. So all night long, a light is shining straight into your eyes in bed. They have blackout curtains, but they don't fit the windows properly, so there is really no relief from that goddamn light all night long. On the balcony there are stained chairs missing cushions. The nightstand also has a mysterious hot pink stain. Our room overlooks the highway, and the road noise is unbearable at times. You can see the bay from there, so it's a nice view if you're deaf. In the room, there's no coffee maker. There's not a bottle of water (Cartagena water is not potable); you have to buy your own from the store downstairs or pay minibar prices. There's not even a cup in the room! So those of you who like to rinse your mouth that way, guess you'll have to use your hands. Then morning comes, and you go to breakfast. Here was our experience: My spouse sits down to save us a table. I go through the line, and they ask my name and room number. Then when she goes through, they tell her you've already been through and almost didn't let her eat. (I guess there are no seconds allowed at this buffet! We didn't attempt.) Finally, it's decided that she isn't a criminal, and she's allowed to eat. She asks for decaf coffee. They don't have any. Then the server starts talking to another server making fun of her (”Can you believe she wants to drink that crap?”) while he's grabbing coffee cups with his fingers inside them instead of grabbing them by the handles. I never saw him wash his hands, so I'm sort of glad there wasn't coffee. They have hot chocolate, but only in milk. I asked for one in water, but apparently that's impossible to do, even though they serve it that way through half the country. Same server making fun of my spouse acts like I'm an alien for having a milk allergy. The checkin process is from 1985, complete with physical paperwork and a shared pen like we're living in pre-COVID times, and a slide credit card machine - if your card doesn't have raised numbers, you can't actually stay here. The old 5 star hotel that stayed when I first came to CARTAGENA 10 years ago, was very impressed, especially for the courtyard layout, the swimming pool and the restaurant on the side. It arrived at around 10:00 am. It has been 28 hours flight and transfer from Beijing. It is really tired and I don’t want to wait until 3 pm (on the Intercontinental, I’ve received $50 for early check-in). The plan to stay; the front desk said that the room was ready to live, and agreed to advance the breakfast on the last day to the day, it is very rare, thank you! The front desk, restaurant and various services are very thoughtful, although the room looks old, still feel things Great value!

I had higher expectations after staying at other Ibis locations such as in Rio de Janeiro (Posto 5). We stayed in a standard room with sea view which was a nice surprise. The air conditioning in the room was very silent and efficient but the beds not very comfortable. No fridge and I was told none of the rooms have a fridge. The room was of decent size and similar in that to other Ibis of that category. The window could not be really opened. On the bright side we did not hear any noise during our stay though the other rooms around seemed occupied. The space dedicated to the food (restaurant) was unappealing at best in my view. I found the breakfast to be rather basic. Maybe due to COVID there was no self service but people were served by the staff, which at times caused quite a line to form. Overall I found the staff to be rather cold. Not rude but not very friendly. This was true when facing staff at the reception, at the ”restaurant” and in general in the hotel (including cleaning staff). Possibly I got spoiled in Medellin where practically everyone is so friendly, welcoming and helpful... even more so in hotels. Also the reception staff seemed to have to follow complicated procedures probably aggravated by slow computers systems so the check in was not exactly fast. the location of the hotel is ok. It is an easy and rather quick walk to the old city and the airport is very close (in the other direction). The beach in front of the hotel, across the road, is typical for Cartagena, nothing spectacular but again I am probably spoiled. It was quite windy the two days and a few kite surfers visibly enjoyed both the sea and the wind.
