On arrival there was chaos at reception as the IT systems were down. Big queues and when check-in was finally completed, we had to be taken to the room to be let in with a master key. For the next 24 hours the same scenario ensued, resulting in having to wait at reception every time in order to get back into the room. Worse still, despite being told after 24 hours that the free hotel wifi was available, it was not. In fact in only came back online after three days, just before we left. Although the room was comfortable, the sliding door to the bathroom was very stiff and there is the potential to get the fingers caught on the door handle on closing.
Another health and safety issue concerns the stairways which were not obvious. When one of the two main lifts were being used by the cleaning staff after breakfast and massive queues developed at the lifts, I had to ask at reception where the emergency stairs were located in order to get back to my room. Also, the coffee and tea sachets were not replaced after the first night. I also think that 24 euro per day for hotel parking is rather steep, and the hotel could have compensated on billing for the disruption caused by their IT system failures. All in all, I was disappointed that such a well known hotel chain could not resolve the problems more quickly. I doubt I will stay at a Melia hotel again.
