I stayed at Marco Polo Hostel for one week after reading many positive reviews. Here’s my honest take:
📍 Location (10/10):
The location is perfect—right in the city center. It’s just a 5–8 minute walk from both Metro 2 (where the hostel is) and Metro 3 / Deak Ferenc Ter (for the 100E airport bus). Couldn’t ask for better.
👋 First Impression & Check-in:
I arrived early at 9 AM on Christmas Day (Dec 25), well before the 2 PM check-in. A friendly staff member (chubby, helpful) allowed me to leave my luggage in the storage room—a very kind gesture that started my stay on a positive note. When I returned to check in, there was a small confusion about my booking (I accidentally booked for 2 people in a 12-bed dorm instead of 1), but the staff handled it calmly and professionally. They also helped sort out a postal code issue for my Hong Kong details—thank you!
🛏 Room & Sleep:
I was assigned beds 3 & 4 in a 2nd-floor dorm. The bunk beds are subdivided, offering decent privacy. Noise was minimal—maybe 10–15 minutes of understandable movement here and there, but nothing disruptive. Most guests were European ( students, southeast Asians and Europeans) staying short-term. Male and female dorms are separate.
🚿 Bathrooms & Facilities:
All showers worked perfectly—good hot/cold water. Remember to bring your own towel and toiletries. As a backpacker, I was prepared, but it’s worth noting.
🍞 Breakfast:
Available for 3200 HUF. Simple but satisfying—fresh, hand-made bread was delicious. I’ve never eaten so much bread in my life, and I mean that in a good way!
💧 Water & Extras:
Bottled water is available for 500 HUF. The friendly slim staff even gave me a discount when I bought five bottles. Tap water in Hungary is drinkable, so you can refill if you prefer. I also appreciated the staff’s fluency in English—communication was never an issue.
🔑 Small Issues Handled Well:
Once I locked myself out of my room, and they promptly lent me a spare key. My key card occasionally failed, but they fixed it in under a minute. The team is flexible and quick to help.
❤ Nice Touch:
During check-in, the staff introduced a charity donation for kids in Hungary. I donated for the first time here—felt good to contribute.
📌 Final Tips:
Read the house rules posted near the counter. Bring your own toiletries and towel. The hostel is well-run, clean, and staffed by helpful, English-speaking professionals.
✅ Overall:
Great value for money, excellent location, and genuinely helpful staff. I’d happily stay again and recommend it to fellow travelers. I will definitely come back here for my solo travel!
Excellent! My roommates were all considerate too, so I slept really well all three nights! The staff were very dedicated. A special shout-out to a young man at the front desk – my small bag fell into the bed frame, and he helped me retrieve it with a great attitude. I really appreciate it! The environment was very clean. I initially found some trash under the mattress, but the cleaning lady immediately took care of it and replaced my sheets with new ones. Highly recommended!
Great location, great atmosphere, great staff and great breakfast! I was able to relax on my bunker without other bunk mates bothering me, and breakfast had a variety of fresh veggie options.
The only concern I had was that the plugs inside the bunks did not really work for my Type C to A plug converter, and it kept falling out multiple times. I was able to charge and use the plug in the common areas, so it wasn’t that grave of a problem.
Great Spot for Travelers — Just Be Mindful of Dorm Life
I stayed here during my trip and really loved the location — super central and easy to get around. The staff were welcoming and the place was clean, which I really appreciated after long days of exploring.
The only downside was the shared dorm experience. One guest came back very late, turned on the lights, talked loudly on the phone, and unfortunately got sick in the bathroom. It made it a bit hard to get proper rest.
Still, the hostel itself is great. If you’re a light sleeper or prefer quiet nights, a private room might be worth considering!
This is a really ideal place to stay while you are in Budapest. Check-in was friendly and easy, including a towel and bedding for your room. There are plenty of common spaces to charge devices and sit with others, although there is not a strong social connection here - a lot of the guests seem to be school groups and other groups of travellers. However, it is such a modern space with a lot of nice amenities and breakfast at an extra charge if you’d like it. The only disadvantage I could find is that the beds are very squeaky, so always a good idea to have earplugs and an eye mask on hand to avoid being woken up during the night if you’re a light sleeper. I would absolutely recommend this hostel and would stay again in the lovely city of Budapest.
I can say this is the best hostel during my entire solo travel experience! The room was clean, the bathroom was spacious and clean as well, the bed was comfortable and (again) clean. Don't know it's because I stay in the female dorm or I was lucky enough to have clean ladies in my dorm, but my worrying mind about hostel was swept away by this hostel cleanliness provision. The bunk is more on box-like and it has curtains (it's clean too!). The front desk were hospitable enough and the interior was also nice. There were plenty of restaurants and supermarket nearby,so you have lots of choice to eat. Yet,you need to walk around 7-10 minutes to reach the nearest tram/bus/metro.And better you bring your own toiletries, though there was a micellar water free to use in the bathroom area. Will definitely go back to this hostel whenn I have a trip to Budapest, 1 night was not just enough.
Location remains Flow Spaces' main bright side.
Sadly, I didnt get much sleep due to inconsiderate roommates who continued typing on their laptop through the night, and generally making noise with shuffling plastic bags past midnight. Of course, that's just bad luck, nothing to blame hostel for. However, thickness of the walls IS hostel's feature, and it's worth knowing that you might hear your next-room neighbors snoring (walls seem to have left thin in grand hostel expansion), which doubles risks of noise-polluted sleep.
The private bathroom is the tiniest ever, with a washbasin the size of a shoe, which makes tooth brushing or face washing a contortionist act.
Now, after several stays here, I can confirm that hostel doesnt ever read or respond to special requests (such as preferred bunk bed) - I understand requests are not always made possible, but staff consistently confirms they dont even read them or care to respond.
I also had a small request for my departure, if my bag could stay in the room an additional half an hour or so after the official check-out time at 11 (i left the hostel at 5:30 am, but wanted not to be pressed by returning earlier just to take the bag out ”in time”), but the staff didnt have any flexibility about it, still requesting 2.000 huf (almost amounting to a night rate) for leaving a piece of luggage past 11. So in the end, i left the hostel early morning, and explored the icy city while rolling my bag non-stop. The policy is ridiculously strict. As, if i wanted to, i could have left my bag in the room without asking sincerely. The check-out is literally dropping the key in the box, so nobody would have ever known. But the fact that it is insisted on the fee, as the housekeeping needs to clean the entire room (i said i would evacuate my bed early anyway), is simply senseless. Last time i stayed here (i spent daytime in the room), i saw what that ”room cleaning” looked like - it was mainly just changing sheets of beds of guests who left , so i cant see how my bag would have made such a large issue for half an hour post check-out, that this silly fee is demanded, as if i booked an extra bed for my bag to sleep in. Like most accommodation providers in the world, hospitality lies on relations with guests, and those are best built if the approach is human, not robotic, and as reasonable as possible.
The location of the hotel is very good, with bus and subway stations just outside, and a fast food supermarket downstairs. The service at the front desk was very good, thanks to Adam and Khalil, who were very friendly and tried their best to meet my needs. Especially Adam, when I couldn't find the entrance, he left the front desk to find me and take me into the hotel; I didn't bring a lock, so I put my luggage in the luggage room, and I went to get my belongings many times to ask him to help open the door, and he was not impatient at all.
Booked a double room because single rooms were sold out, but received a very big room, located in the centre of budapest, close to the AirPort Express stop 100E as well, have great pubs around. The hotel itself is good, very clean, provides great facilities, shower is hot enough, and enjoyed my stay there, I will recommend to any solo travellers or friends!
Terrace is awesome, staff friendly. Vacak the cat is awesome too. This hostel is a great option to spend some time on the island, had a good night sleep and it was clean. Often though staff can be missing from the reception during the stated reception hours, and nearby is more of a party scene with few quality dining options. The 400ft Costa coffee capsules aren't exactly good either, so there is some space for improvement compared to some of the newer hostels in town.

Good price making budget travellers free from sleeping rough, receptionist stays on duty till midnight is a great advantage standing out from other ho(s)tels in Budapest as well
I stayed for 6 nights in an 8 bed female dorm with en-suite. Bed is comfortable and each one has a lamp , plug socket, privacy curtain, small lock box on wall within bed space and an under bed storage box that is big enough to hold a carry on suitcase (need own padlock). The room is spacious enough to not feel cramped even with 4 bunk beds. There are hooks on the side of the bed and walls. The en-suite shower room had a hairdryer and soap/shampoo in the cubicle. There is also a washroom in the corridor. Rooms are cleaned each morning. Room has heavy blackout style curtain and there are two lights meaning the smaller light near the door can be put on by someone arriving late. I had no problems sleeping. Roommates are the luck of the draw; all mine were quiet and respectful. The hostel is in a charismatic old building yet modern and clean. The beds are spacious and comfortable to be in, also lounge areas, dining areas and separate work areas with tables being used by people on computers. Free WiFi is stable throughout. Kitchen area has multiple cooking hobs, necessary cooking equipment and even a toasted sandwich maker which I enjoyed making use of. The hostel is clean, well organized and designed well for travelers. It is not a party hostel and a quiet place to chill, I.e. not the place for someone who is looking for a bar and active social scene within the hostel though everyone I met was friendly. Feels safe and secure with keycard access. The location is great; being less than 5 min walk from Fovam Ter means lots of transport links for bus, tram or metro. I arrived and departed by FlixBus and bus 83 provides a direct 25 min route to the bus station. The hostel is right next door to the Great Market Hall in which there is an Aldi to buy cooking basics and all the market stalls for Hungarian specialties and souvenirs. Easy walking distance to the historic centre and places tourists would want to go. I would definitely stay again.
Maverick Central Market is a gem for solo travelers like me! 🌟 The location is unbeatable—right near the Danube, markets, and public transport, making exploration a breeze. The dorms are spotless, with comfy beds, blackout curtains, and spacious lockers. The shared bathrooms are pristine and well-maintained. I loved the friendly staff who made check-in seamless and even offered great local tips. The gym was a surprising bonus—perfect for staying active on the go 💪 While it can get lively at night, the vibe is social and fun. Overall, a fantastic stay with excellent value for money. Highly recommend! 😊
A fantastic place to stay in the heart of Budapest and near to all attractions. The room was big and clean and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. A big shout out to Hanni at reception for helping me with directions to getthe airport bus
Very clean and tidy. A working kitchen with coffee machine you can use. a dish washer where you do not need to clean the plates. They give you free chocolate and a towel too. Right next to Lidl making it easy to replenish the staples.

Not cleaned well, we saw hairs on the linens from the previous people. It looked washed, but not good enough. Otherwise, location and self check in is great.
