Flight from Sanya (SYX) to Shanghai (SHA)

Brief intro about Shanghai:

Shanghai is the largest city in China and one of the most populous cities in the world. There’s a lot to the city—depending where in the city they are, visitors might find themselves surrounded by dense skyscrapers, European-style colonial buildings, or a bustling park amongst lush greenery.

The city is home to one of the world’s major airports and is often a popular destination and transit point on intercontinental itineraries. Tourists visiting Shanghai are spoiled for choice and have the option of experiencing world-class accommodation, dining, and shopping.

Airport & Terminal Information

Shanghai has two airports. If you’re flying in from Sanya, you can book flights to either Pudong International Airport or Hongqiao International Airport. It’s best to check which airport is closest to your hotel or place of stay before choosing a flight, or you might end up with an additional hour of travel (at least!) upon arrival. Shanghai is a vast city—you can travel on public transportation for hours and still be within the city limits.

Pudong International Airport (PVG)

Both terminals in Pudong International Airport serve domestic flights. Terminal 1 is home to airlines including China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines, while flights from China Southern Airlines, Suparna Airlines, and Spring Airlines generally land at Terminal 2.

Pudong International Airport is located 25 miles east of the city. Although it is well connected in terms of public transportation, if your destination is not located in Pudong New District, selecting Hongqiao International Airport will likely cut down on your travel time after arrival.

Hongqiao International Airport (SHA)

Hongqiao International Airport also has two terminals, both receiving flights from Sanya. Most domestic flights, including those operated by Juneyao Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, and Shanghai Airlines, land at Terminal 2. For flights from Sanya to Shanghai Hongqiao, only those operated by Spring Airlines arrive at Terminal 1.

It’s important to note that Terminals 1 & 2 of Hongqiao Airport are not connected and there is currently no way to transfer between the two terminals on foot. Visitors who need to transfer between terminals can take a shuttle bus which departs every half hour or ride line 10 of the metro for one station.

Getting to Downtown from the Airport

Pudong International Airport (PVG)

Although there is a bit of distance between the airport and city center, there are many ways to reach downtown from Pudong Airport.

By Maglev

Riding around 12 minutes on the Shanghai maglev (magnetic levitation train) will get you to Longyang Road, where you can transfer to metro lines 2, 7, 16, or 18. This short ride covers a distance of over 18 miles. When compared to the metro, this option is a bit pricier. Without a metro card, the fare costs CNY50 while round-trip tickets cost CNY80. Those who swipe a metro card to board will pay CNY40 per direction. If you plan to take the maglev, be sure to take note of your flight’s arrival time. At the time of writing, the last maglev departs from Pudong International Airport at 21:40.

By Metro

Pudong International Airport has its own metro station on line 2, which is one of the busiest lines in the city. From the airport, it takes just over an hour to reach the city center at People’s Square. Other popular locations, including Jing’an Temple, the Bund, and Century Avenue can also be reached from line 2 without any transfers. Tickets from Pudong International Airport to People’s Square cost CNY7. Prices to other stations vary by distance.

By Taxi

You can also take a taxi from Pudong International Airport to central Shanghai. To take a taxi, follow the signs after picking up your luggage and exiting the terminal. During peak times, note that you may have to wait in line. As a reference, it costs around CNY180 to reach People’s Square and around CNY230 to reach Hongqiao International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. If you’re arriving after 23:00, taxis will cost a bit more. Expect to pay about CNY50 higher than the daytime rate.

By Airport Bus

There are many buses that operate routes between Pudong International Airport and other areas of the city. If you take the bus, be aware that they usually depart once full. Bus fares range from CNY15 to CNY34, depending on the distance of your stop. The hours in which buses operate vary depending on the route, so be sure to check the official site for the must updated information. If you arrive after 23:00, only the late night bus will be available. Some popular bus routes frequented by tourists are as follows:

  • Airport Line 1: Hongqiao International Airport, Hongqiao Railway Station
  • Airport Line 2: Hotel Equatorial Shanghai
  • Airport Line 5: Shanghai Railway Station (Also stops near the Bund & People’s Square)
  • Late Night Bus: Hongqiao Traffic Hub (Also stops near Century Avenue & Jing’an Temple)

Hongqiao International Airport (SHA)

Located in the western outskirts of the city, reaching the city center from Hongqiao Airport is quite convenient.

By Bus

Hongqiao Airport has several airport bus lines with stops all around the city. In addition to airport buses, which cost CNY1–CNY34 depending on the distance, Hongqiao Airport is also serviced by several public bus lines. Some bus routes departing from Terminal 2 frequented by tourists are as follows:

  • Hongqiao Hub Line 1: Shenhong Road-Zhouhong Road
  • Hongqiao Hub Line 9: West Jiading Metro Station
  • Bus 941: Shanghai Railway Station
  • Bus 316: Lujiazui (Night bus which operates from 23:00–5:00)

Bus options from Hongqiao Airport Terminal 1 are a bit more limited:

  • Bus 807: Qingjian Xincun (Last bus departs at 23:00)
  • Bus 176: West Tianshan Road-Fuquan Road (Operates 7:00-9:30, 17:00-19:30 on working days)

Please check the official website for the most updated ticket and timetable information.

By Taxi

Taxis are another option for getting from Hongqiao International Airport to your destination. During the day, the base fare is CNY14. Please note that fares increase in price at night during the hours of 23:00 and 5:00. For reference, the price for a taxi from Hongqiao Airport to People’s Square is about CNY75 during the day or CNY100 at night. At the airport, be sure to take a metered taxi and ignore drivers standing around the exits shouting “taxi!” They usually charge more than the standard rates.

By Metro

Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of Hongqiao International Airport have stations on line 10 of the Shanghai Metro which passes through central areas of the city, including Xintiandi, South Shaanxi Road, and Wujiaochang. Many travelers also chose to start their journey on line 10 and transfer to other lines. Terminal 2 of Hongqiao International Airport is also connected to line 2, which stretches across the city through People’s Square and the Bund before terminating at Pudong International Airport.
