Brief Intro about Chiang Rai

Previously a capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom, Chiang Rai was founded in 1262 and named after the then reigning leader, King Mangrai. Today, it’s Thailand’s northernmost major city, bordering Myanmar and Laos, and is considered one of the oldest settlements in the country. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a sleepy provincial town though, Chiang Rai is tremendously rich in history and culture, and full of surprises!

By Taxi

It takes approximately 30 minutes to get to Chiang Rai’s city center via taxi. The metered taxi counter is located outside of the terminal, left of the arrivals exit. Metered taxis are available 24/7, and costs range between THB110 to THB160, depending on drop-off location.

By Airport Shuttle Bus

The cheapest way of getting to the downtown area from Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI) is by CR Bus. The shuttle bus service runs from Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI) to several stops in the city center, ending its service at Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 2. The CR Bus leaves every 30 minutes, from 06:20–22:30 daily. Each bus ticket costs THB20. You may purchase bus tickets on the shuttle services’ official website, or pay the fare on board the bus. The prominent purple buses can be found at the right end of the airport terminal.

By Grab

Although Chiang Rai is part of Thailand’s northernmost province, it still experiences a tropical climate. If you’re after dry weather, the best time to visit Chiang Rai is between the months of November and February.
